“The main thing about Bruce Lee is that, he was a little guy. And you know, his quickness, aggressiveness, explosive power, and being a great athlete to have all these, his body, his look, you know, all these things have to do with discipline and structure. He was able to go against the biggest guy, regardless of who he was.” – Evander Holyfield

“If you don’t take no chances, then you’re not a performer. Performers always take chances. You go see a singer, they’ll hit the high note. They’ll hit that note; they’re not afraid, they’re gonna exaggerate the fact and make me enjoy it, make me say, ‘Wow, I wish I could do that!” – Evander Holyfield

“Well, of course a boxing match is hard because boxing isn’t set for you to do good. You have to force your will upon someone, but dancing you don’t have to force your will. It should be a lot easier because if I make a mistake, I don’t get hit.” – Evander Holyfield

“They don’t show Olympic boxing on TV in prime time. They haven’t done that since 1988. In 1992, they showed one: Oscar De La Hoya, and in 1996, they didn’t show it. In 2000, they didn’t show it, and in 2004, they didn’t show it. You would think the United States didn’t have a boxing team in 2008.” – Evander Holyfield

“Madison Square Garden, November 1984. I don’t recall taking too much fear into the ring. I knew I could fight. But I got a big shock. The story of my life, in my very first fight.” – Evander Holyfield

He defeated Herbie Hide in the second round of their fight to claim the WBO heavyweight championship in 1999.

He then made two title defenses but fell to Chris Byrd in 2000, primarily due to Vitali’s severe shoulder injury, which resulted in a stoppage.

Klitschko was in the lead when the fight was stopped, according to the scorecards, and he then faced harsh criticism for ending the fight.

After 5 straight victories, Klitschko proved that he deserved a chance to challenge Lennox Lewis for the WBC championship.

Despite being the underdog, Vitali startled Lewis with a series of powerful blows, but Klitschko received a cut over his left eye, causing the referee to once more stop the fight due to an injury.

When the fight was called off, Klitschko once more had the advantage on the scorecards but failed to secure a victory.

Willing to fight Lewis again, Vitali put in a valiant effort to do so, but Lewis relinquished the championship when he retired in 2004.

Ultimately, Klitschko went on to defeat the South African heavyweight champion, Corrie Sanders, to claim the WBC championship and prove he was the best.

After a successful medical procedure to fix his ACL ligament, Klitschko made a comeback in 2008 to challenge Samuel Peter for the heavyweight championship.

After that, he successfully defended his championship against a variety of opponents up until 2013, when he decided to quit and concentrate on his political career.

Early Life

Vitali Volodymyrovych Klitschko was born July 19, 1971, in Belovodskoye, Kirghiz SSR, Soviet Union which is now known as Kyrgyzstan.

Vitali was raised by his father, a Soviet Air Force major general and military attaché in East Germany. A short time after the Chornobyl nuclear tragedy, his father, who was one of the commanders assigned with the cleanup, received a cancer diagnosis.

Klitschko worked as a toolmaker at the Kyiv Automation Plant as a young man to help pay the expenses. Years later, he was alleged to have worked as a debt collector for a mafia lord in the 1990s, an accusation that Vitali has strongly rejected.

Vitali’s brother Wladimir Klitschko is also a heavyweight boxer and has managed to dominate the sport with his brother.

Because of the nature of their father’s work, they had to relocate regularly to other nations and Soviet republics. He ended up attending multiple schools as a result and served in the military in Uman, a Soviet Air Force base, from 1989 until 1991.

Klitschko began boxing in the 1980s, and Anatoliy Klimanov, a former Soviet fighter, served as his primary trainer.

However, when the Soviet Union decided to no longer outlaw the sport, Vitali soon picked up kickboxing.

He competed and trained in kickboxing, karate, and boxing throughout these formative years, displaying potential in all three sports.

Career

The career of Holyfield kicked off when he was in his teen years, and at the age of twenty, he represented the U.S. in the Pan American Games held in 1983 in Caracas, Venezuela, where he won a silver medal. He won a bronze medal during the Summer Olympics Games held in Los Angeles, California, in 1984.

The professional career of Holyfield started with a lightweight fight at Madison Square Garden on November 15, 1984. He was fighting against Lionel Byarm, and he won in the sixth round.  In 1985 he moved to the cruiserweight division, and his first fight in this category was against Tyrone Booze. Evander won the fight in an eight-round decision.

Evander was a go-getter, and in 1988, he decided to move up and pursue the World Heavyweight Championship, which was then held by Mike Tyson. His first fight on this category was against former Tyson’s rival James Quick Tills, and it took place in July 1988, at Lake Tahoe, Nevada, and Evander emerged the winner. He stayed for more than two years, winning all the fights, but he had not met with Mike Tyson.

He finally faced Tyson on November 9, 1996, and although Tyson was heavily favored to win, Evander made history by defeating him in the 11th round on a TKO. A rematch took place on June 28, 1997, and it was known as The Bite Fight because Tyson bit Holyfield’s year was leading to a disqualification. Evander announced his retirement in June 2014, and he is currently the boxing advisor to Zhang Zhilei, who is a heavyweight prospect.
