Receive timeout

Internet Explorer had a default receive timeout of one hour (a call on a socket will timeout after one hour), that could be controlled via the registry. In contrast, I don’t see an attempt to set a timeout in the Chromium code, or a requirement in fetch. Experimenting locally, a top-level navigation does not time out in over an hour. Chromium uses non-blocking reads, so SO_RCVTIMEO is not set, and I don’t see any obvious timeouts in higher levels.

Other timeout trivia

• On non-mobile platforms, Chromium sends TCP keep-alives every 45 seconds.
• A H2/H3 connection expects response to a PING in 10 seconds or the connection is considered Hung.
• A previously-used idle socket will live for five minutes awaiting reuse. (The header is deliberately not respected to control this).
• An unused idle socket (speculatively created) will live for 1 minute unless overridden by a field trial.
• The SSL Session cache is set to an hour.
• TCP/IP Connection timeouts are complicated but seem to be 21 seconds (7s, 3 retries) in practice.
• Proxy detection is delayed for 2 seconds after network change; after failure, it polls; if a proxy fails, it’s marked bad for five minutes.
• Some SameSite cookie rules are relaxed for 2 minutes on new cookies.
• There’s a URLRequestThrottler that uses exponential backoff for servers that seem to be overloaded.
• Prefetched resources are good for five minutes.
• QUIC demands that packets arrive within 2 minutes and has a maximum idle timeout of 10 minutes.
• WSAETIMEDOUT events mapped to ERR_TIMED_OUT.
• An entry in Chromium’s DNS Cache has a timeout of 60 seconds, or longer.
• CORS preflight responses are cached for 5 seconds by default, but may specify a lifetime of up to two hours.

Edge vs Internet Explorer: Security

Perhaps a more significant point of difference between the two browsers is security, an area where Edge ups the ante significantly over IE.

Edge’s password-management system is fully integrated with Windows 10’s Passport security system. The move to a standards-based extension system will also improve security, limiting the sorts of resources that extensions have access to.

The removal of all that old code will also prove beneficial as well, reducing the browser’s surface area for potential hackers to exploit.

Possibly the biggest plus point, however, is related to Microsoft Edge’s status as a Universal app. All Universal apps run within a sandbox framework, which effectively insulates it from sensitive system resources; should there be an exploit of a vulnerability within the browser, its extensions or code within a web page, the attacker will have less access to the system’s resources than the user. In Microsoft’s words: “Every internet page that Microsoft Edge visits will be rendered inside an app container, the latest and most secure client-side app sandbox in Windows.”

Sandbox-based browsing is not a new thing. A “protected mode” first appeared in IE7 with Windows Vista, and an “enhanced protected mode” was introduced in IE10/11, but it wasn’t turned on by default because some plugins weren’t compatible with it. Microsoft Edge, by contrast, is able to work within a sandbox at all time.

Google Chrome

Конечно, владельцам современных компьютеров с 8-16 Гбайт RAM эта особенность не доставит проблем. Ease of Use

There is no need to install Edge on a Windows PC because it’s already included as the device’s default browser. Installing Edge on Android devices is a straightforward process of downloading it from the Google Play store and installing it within seconds. The simple design of the Chromium open source browser makes Edge, Chrome and others very easy to use.

Vertical tabs are a good way to clearly see the headings of every open tab.

Tabs & Bookmarks

With Edge, creating new tabs will infinitely shrink the tabs rather than enable horizontal scrolling. If the tab bar gets too crowded, you can enable vertical tabs to clearly see the heading of every tab in an easy-to-read list.

If the tab bar is getting too full, open the dropdown menu to clearly see all of your open tabs.

Similarly, Chrome doesn’t include horizontal scrolling and lets the tabs shrink indefinitely as new tabs are added. You can mute, pin and group tabs in Chrome, and the dropdown menu in the tab bar shows a list of all open tabs. It isn’t exactly the same as vertical tabs, but it helps you to clearly see a list of your tabs when the tab bar gets crowded.

Bookmarks can be imported into Edge from Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox, but no other browser. Bookmarks from other browsers must be imported from HTML files. As for Chrome, bookmarks can be directly imported from Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, plus HTML files.

If you want to import bookmarks from a browser other than Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer, they will have to be imported manually from HTML files.

Windows принудительно открывает сайты в Edge

Думаю многие уже слышали о том что Windows прекращает поддержку Internet Explorer и полностью переходить на Edge. Могу сказать что как Internet Explorer так же и новый браузер Edge не пользуется большой популярностью у пользователей. Лично я открываю Internet Explorer только для работы на порталах с ЭЦП. Пользователей как то нужно приучать к Edge, подумали в Microsoft. В результате после очередного обновления ОС я заметил очень странную вещь. При попытки открыть Internet Explorer открывается браузер Edge. Проверка настроек ОС ничего не дала, после прочтения нескольких форумов выяснилось что проблема в самом Edge.

После запуска Internet Explorer открывается Edge

Оказалось в настройки браузера добавил пункт который принудительно запускает Edge вместо Internet Explorer. Что бы его отключить нужно сделать несколько простых действий. Первое открываем браузер Edge и заходим в настройки.

Далее в слева в параметрах ищем пункт «Браузер по умолчанию». В открывшемся окне в пункте «Разрешить Internet Explorer открываеть сайты в Microsoft Edge» ставим «Никогда».

Теперь при запуске Internet Explorer будет открываться именно он.

Cookies

• Edge79 and Chrome support the Leave Secure Cookies Alone spec, which blocks HTTP pages from setting cookies with the Secure attribute and restricts the ways in which HTTP pages may interfere with cookies sent to HTTPS pages. Legacy Edge does not have these restrictions.
• Edge79 and Chrome support (restrictions on cookies whose names begin with the prefixes __Secure- and __Host-). Legacy Edge does not enforce these restrictions.
• Edge79, Chrome, and Firefox ignore Set-Cookie headers with values over 4096 characters in length (including cookie-controlling directives like SameSite). In contrast, IE and Edge18 permit cookies with name-value pairs up to 5118 characters in length.
• Modern Edge and Chrome default to SameSite=Lax for cookies.

Privacy

Security deals with external threats but privacy is more concerned with internal factors, like the exposure of your data to the browser developer, its partners and other third parties. Unfortunately, neither browser is very good about protecting their users’ privacy.

Google is infamous for its data collection practices. Since a large part of Google’s revenue comes from creating targeted ads, the company has a vested interest in knowing as much about you as it can.

Tracking Protection

Edge’s tracking prevention comes in three levels, with the “balanced” option enabled by default. This mode blocks trackers from sites you haven’t been to yet and all known trackers that are harmful. The basic mode allows all trackers except those that are known to be harmful, and the most strict tracking prevention blocks most trackers. Some websites may not work.

Under Chrome’s privacy settings, you can find a setting disabled by default labeled “do not track.” This option will cause Chrome to send an anti-tracking request to every website you visit.

Internet Explorer (IE) and Microsoft Edge are like distant cousins in the browser family. They share some genes (think: Microsoft DNA) but are two different entities with their own quirks.

1. Era and Origins: IE is the old-timer. It’s been around since the mid-’90s and became THE browser for a long time. On the other hand, Edge is like that cool millennial cousin who’s more in tune with modern times. It started its journey in 2015.

5. Security: Edge has put on some serious muscle here. With features like tracking prevention and Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, it offers a more secure browsing experience than its elder cousin.
6. Extensions and Integrations: Edge, being Chromium-based, now has access to the Chrome Web Store’s vast array of extensions, in addition to its store. So, it’s like shopping at two malls instead of one.
7. The Downfall of a Giant: Microsoft has decided to put IE out to pasture. They announced its retirement, so if IE was your first browser love (or hate), you might want to pour one out for it.

In my humble (and slightly playful) opinion, if IE was the dependable old truck from the ’90s, Edge is the sleek electric car of today. Both have their charm, but I know which one I’d rather take for a spin in 2023! My recommendation – do not use Internet Explorer!

Security considerations for each browser

Internet Explorer 11 VS Microsoft Edge: User Interface

The visual difference between Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer 11 isn’t all that much. There hasn’t been a vast overhaul of the UI, or any drastic changes to the page layouts, and even the logo is similar.

Instead, Edge features a host of minor tweaks that somehow add up to something much more impressive than IE. The interface is much more minimalist, with the navigation buttons reduced to their bare minimum.

The whole experience feels sleeker and more streamlined than IE’s indefinably clunky navigation. It’s a much more pleasant browser to use, and on a par with the aesthetically gorgeous Chrome.

HTTPS – TLS Protocol

• Edge 113+ and Chrome (around 112+) changed to use the Chromium certificate verifier by default. This verifier has slightly different behavior than the old Windows verifier; see this post for details.
• Edge79 and Chrome enable TLS/1.3 by default; Edge18 does not support TLS/1.3 prior to Windows 10 19H1, and even on that platform it is disabled by default (and known to be buggy).
• Edge79 and Chrome support a different list of TLS ciphers than Edge18.
• Edge79 and Chrome send GREASE tokens in HTTPS handshakes; Edge18 does not.
• Edge79, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari from using banned (weak) ciphers, showing ERR_HTTP2_INADEQUATE_TRANSPORT_SECURITY if the server attempts to use such ciphers. Edge18 did not enforce this requirement. This has primarily impacted intranet websites served by IIS on Windows Server 2012 where the server was either misconfigured or does not have the latest updates installed. Patching the server and/or adjusting its TLS configuration will resolve the problem. End-users should complain to the server operators, and can work around the problem by closing all instances of Edge then restarting with a commandline argument msedge.exe –disable-http2 to disable support for the faster network protocol.
• Chrome and Edge use the HSTS Preload list checked into Chromium and generated by HSTSPreload.org. Updates to that list HSTS updates flow through the release channels, so if you get your site added or removed from the HSTS Preload list this week, it’ll be in the Stable release in ~8-12 weeks (0-4 weeks of Canary, 4 weeks of Dev, 4 weeks of beta). Perhaps surprisingly, Edge/Chrome do not update the HSTS preload list out-of-band (via the component updater). Internet Explorer (WinINET) updates their version of the list (which is based on Mozilla’s list, which is based on Chromium’s list) very irregularly (~twice a year).

Opera

Браузер Opera хорошо известен тем, кто активно пользовался интернетом в конце нулевых. Именно тогда эта программа была очень популярна. У Opera имеется боковая панель, на которой расположились иконки мессенджеров и социальных сетей Telegram, WhatsApp, VK, Facebook Messenger и . Войдя в свои аккаунты в этих сервисах, пользователь сможет получать входящие сообщения и переписываться напрямую во всплывающих окнах с чатами, не заходя на страницы самих соцсетей.

Однако не обошлось и без минусов. Opera достаточно неэкономно расходую оперативную память, поэтому 10-15 открытых в браузере вкладок не позволят комфортно работать с другими программами тем пользователям, компьютер которых оснащен менее 6 Гбайт ОЗУ.

Также в Opera нет встроенного переводчика – его придется добавлять с помощью дополнений. Кстати, магазин расширений здесь не такой богатый, как у Chrome, но большое количество встроенных функций нивелируют этот минус.

Как включить и отключить режим Internet Explorer в Edge

Когда в Microsoft Edge активен режим Internet Explorer, вы можете вручную загрузить веб-страницу или приложение с помощью движка Trident MSHTML в любое время.

1. Загрузите веб-страницу или приложение в Edge.

2. Откройте меню «Настройки и прочее».

3. Выберите перезагрузить в режиме Internet Explorer.

Сайт перезагрузится в режиме Internet Explorer. Вы увидите знакомый логотип Internet Explorer слева от адресной строки Microsoft Edge, подтверждающий это. Ссылки, которые вы нажимаете, также загружаются в режиме Internet Explorer, если они загружают страницы, принадлежащие тому же домену.

Если у вас есть другие вкладки с устаревшим содержимым, необходимо вручную включить для них режим Internet Explorer.

Если вы хотите вернуться к использованию Хром двигатель, просто повторно откройте меню «Настройки и прочее» и выберите «Выйти из режима Internet Explorer». Или просто оставьте вкладку.
