9 Worlds: Super Mario Odyssey
The places Mario goes in Super Mario Odyssey really do make the game feel like the adventure of a lifetime. It goes far beyond the typical grass land, desert land, ice land formula from the Italian plumber’s past, with each world offering something completely unique to help set it apart from the rest.
The more traditional world designs found in Super Mario 3D World are by no means bad, but they’re just nowhere near as well-realized as the ones found in Odyssey. With that in mind, the latter’s title is perhaps a lot more fitting than most players will ever realize as it perfectly captures the sheer scale of the adventure that’s on offer here.
10 Multiplayer: Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario Odyssey does have multiplayer functionality, but it leaves an awful lot to be desired. A second player can take control of Cappy, but their controls are incredibly limited when compared to player one. Much like Mario Galaxy, the second player is more like an assistant than a true participant in the gameplay as a result.
Super Mario 3D World, on the other hand, was designed with multiplayer in mind. Not only does the main game support four players at once, but the new addition, Bowser’s Fury, also offers up two-player co-op. It’s streets ahead of Odyssey in this respect and is, therefore, the better choice for those looking for an enjoyable couch co-op platformer.
‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Shows the Pros and Cons of the Girlboss Factor

Peach seems to have fallen victim to the «girlboss factor.» This refers to the attempts to create more well-rounded female characters, and forgetting to give them the elements that make them well-rounded characters with definitive personalities aside from girlbossing. A prime example would be Camila Cabello in Cinderella; as the titular princess, she aims to start her own dress shop, but viewers don’t see much in the way of her personality. Ironically, Taylor-Joy would provide an example of a truly well-rounded female character in The Menu as Margot. She’s caustic and rude, but she has a sharp mind and is able to outwit Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) at his own game. And she’s allowed to fail; take the scene where she attempts to call the Coast Guard. If a screenwriter wishes for all of their characters to be well-rounded, then they have to give all of the characters flaws and foibles. Princess Peach, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to have much in the way of flaws, let alone any personality traits aside from being a badass.
To its credit, The Super Mario Bros. Movie does attempt to give Peach some depth. She’s shown to care deeply for the residents of the Mushroom Kingdom, even surrendering herself to Bowser in order to prevent them from dying. The movie even manages to expand upon her origins — or at the very least provide some for her. At one point in the film, she discusses her life with Mario and reveals that someone sent her to the Mushroom Kingdom as a child. Who exactly is responsible for sending her there remains mystery, but with the film breaking box office records it wouldn’t be a surprise if that plot point is touched upon in a sequel.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now playing in theaters.

The Mario power-ups are arguably just as iconic as the character himself. However, even though Super Mario 3D World has a great selection of them, including the hugely popular cat suit, Super Mario Odyssey completely changed the game thanks to the addition of Cappy and the game’s capture mechanics.
Possessing enemies was by no means a new gameplay mechanic in 2017, but, like Nintendo often does with things that it borrows, the developer put its own unique spin on it. From becoming a frog to disguising as a manhole cover, the capture powers are all memorable in their own way and feel like a cross between Mario and Kirby in many respects.
8 Levels: Super Mario 3D World
While the worlds in Super Mario Odyssey comfortably beat out those of its competitor, the individual levels are arguably just that little bit better in 3D World. The open-world designs do work well for Super Mario Odyssey, particularly given how many moons there are to collect, but some areas can perhaps be a little too open at times.
Super Mario 3D World is a lot more inventive with its level design, often sacrificing scale for quality. They are also a lot of fun to go through quickly in smaller, more bite-sized chunks, which some will feel makes them a much better fit for the Switch’s handheld approach to gaming.

3 Music: Super Mario Odyssey
Both games have excellent soundtracks that are exactly what one might expect to find in a Mario game. While nothing about Super Mario 3D World’s score is bad though, it’s just not that memorable aside from the main theme and one or two of the other tracks. At least not when compared to the Odyssey soundtrack, anyway.
The composers of the score for Super Mario Odyssey play around with different styles of music to great effect. The resulting fusion pieces fit the themes of the game’s worlds almost perfectly and really help to make levels feel like they’re alive. Plus, “Jump Up Super Star” is a real banger.
6 Characters: Super Mario 3D World
What Super Mario 3D World lacks in costumes, it more than makes up for with its large cast of playable characters. Being able to control Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Peach is yet another nice little nod to the series’ past and, in some ways, serves as a return of sorts to the franchise’s 2D roots.
This dynamic had not been seen since Super Mario Bros. 2 on the NES and is an excellent addition for those hoping to play as somebody other than Mario or Luigi for a change. Seeing Peach and Toad’s various costumes is a lot of fun and something that fans will hopefully get to see a lot more of in future Mario games. The unlockable character is also a nice touch.

Created by Nintendo in 1985, Super Mario is a long running series of platform games. The series primarily revolves around the protagonist, Mario, and other playable characters, such as his brother Luigi, rescuing the kidnapped princess Princess Peach from the primary antagonist, Bowser. As the player progresses, they can gather in-game power-up items that let the player character gain new abilities or forms. During a prerecorded Nintendo Direct presentation broadcast in September 2018, Nintendo showcased a trailer for their ‘Deluxe’ re-release of for the Nintendo Switch, which featured their character Toadette as a new playable option, and a new power-up exclusively for her, the Super Crown. When picked up, it would transform Toadette into «Peachette», a form that resembled Princess Peach but with Toadette’s hairstyle and other distinctive features.
The unveiling of Peachette led to speculation and theories by fans over how the Super Crown item operates within the game’s universe. Peach Out-Marios Mario in His Own Movie

Throughout The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Peach is shown to be highly competent. She’s able to utilize the power-ups scattered throughout the Mushroom Kingdom to great effect, whether it’s clearing an obstacle course or fighting against the Koopa Kingdom. She even manages to outfox Bowser at the end of the film! When the dragon threatens to burn down the Mushroom Kingdom unless Peach marries him, she agrees…and then manages to free his prisoners while attacking him at the same time.
In contrast, Mario often struggles to survive in this strange new world. A simple obstacle course presents a challenge for him, and his fight against Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) is won mostly through luck. This is even lampshaded in a scene toward the film’s second act; when one of the Mushroom Kingdom’s inhabitants asks who Mario is, Peach replies «He’s not important!» On the surface this is meant to be funny, but it also underlines a major problem with the film. If Peach is this skilled, she shouldn’t really need Mario. In fact, it could have been retitled The Princess Peach Movie because she’s the most interesting character in the film!
4 Collectables: Super Mario 3D World
There is a lot to do in Super Mario Odyssey, as one might expect from an open-world game. The amount of collectibles in Super Mario 3D World really puts it to shame, however, with more than 500 things for players to collect throughout the game’s many stages. That may seem like a lot to some, but it really does encourage players to explore every last inch of a stage.
There are 100 Cat Shines to collect in total, as well as 380 Green Stars and 85 Stamps. Most are fairly easy to find, although some will require a little bit of digging, while five of the stamps require players to beat every level with all five playable characters. It can be a bit of a chore, but it’s arguably worth the effort, as finding everything will grant access to the World Crown bonus level.
Princess Peach Once Had Her Own Video Game

2006 saw the release of Super Princess Peach for the Nintendo DS, which reversed Peach and Mario’s roles. Bowser, in an attempt to harness the powers of the mysterious Vibe Island, resorts to kidnapping Mario and Luigi. This leads Peach to travel to Vibe Island to rescue the brothers, utilizing her own unique attacks and skills against Bowser’s forces. Most of those attacks include her trademark pink parasol, nicknamed «Perry»; she uses him to glide short distances and deliver punishing blows to opponents. Peach also utilizes different «vibes» based on her emotions. For example, the Calm vibe slowly heals her while the Rage vibe makes her temporary invincible.
Super Princess Peach is one of the best-selling games produced for the Nintendo DS, and for good reason. It manages to put a new spin on the Super Mario franchise while also giving Peach the well-deserved spotlight. Horvath, Jelenic, and Fogel could have definitely used it for inspiration, especially as their take on Peach raises a good question: does she even need Mario in this movie?
2 Mini-Games: Super Mario 3D World
Like the collectibles, there are a lot of things to do in Super Mario Odyssey that could be considered mini-games. For as enjoyable as some of them are though, none of them are so good that they spawned their own spin-off title. The same cannot be said, however, of one of the mini-games found in Super Mario 3D World.
The Captain Toad stages found throughout the game are completely unique and really helped to break up the constant barrage of traditional platforming levels. They were so good, in fact, that Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker was released as a standalone title shortly after 3D World’s release and has since been ported over to the Switch.

Over the course of the film, Peach aims to protect the Mushroom Kingdom and her subjects from being conquered by Bowser (Jack Black). How does she plan to do this? By enlisting the help of the Kong Kingdom and their army of apes. However, things get complicated when Mario (Chris Pratt) barges in seeking her help in rescuing his brother Luigi (Charlie Day). The fact that Luigi also happens to be one of Bowser’s prisoners helps convince Peach to let Mario and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) accompany her on the way to the Kong Kingdom.
Anyone with even a passing knowledge of the Mario games knows that many of them feature Mario racing through the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser’s clutches. In making Peach the experienced warrior and Mario the newcomer, The Super Mario Bros. Movie attempts to offer a fresh perspective on Peach as a character. But this isn’t the first time Peach has had a major leading role in the world of Super Mario.
